Small group mahjong lessons! ๐
Rivertowns Mahjong is a welcoming space for learning, playing, and connecting through the game of mahjong. We offer classes, open play, and events designed to build confidence, skill, and community at the table. Whether you are new to the game or a seasoned player, Rivertowns Mahjong is a place to settle in, make friends and escape the pressures of the everyday.
Building community one tile at a time
Never use a joker in a pair
Kasumi and Brigid met at an open play mahjong game right here in the Rivertowns. After many shared tables, open games, and tournaments, they discovered a mutual love for the game and its intricate beauty. Kasumi is known for memorizing each yearโs card so thoroughly she can play without one (yes, really!). She knows the game inside and out, from rules and variations to strategy, flow, and table dynamics. Brigid is drawn to the patterns, aesthetics, and rhythm of the game, and brings a background in marketing, branding and design.
At their tables, mahjong is approachable, supportive, and fun. Kasumi and Brigid love helping players build confidence, whether that means learning the rules, refining strategy, or simply settling into the flow of the game. They believe mahjong should feel welcoming while still honoring its depth and challenge.
Their goal is for you to leave feeling comfortable, capable, and excited to play anywhere the tiles take you. With the right balance of ease and a little friendly competition, mahjong becomes something you can truly sink into and return to again and again.
Upcoming Experiences
June 20 and June 27
2:00 to 5:00PM
Ready to learn the art of American Mahjong? Spread across two weekends, this course gives you the time and space to absorb the game. Each three-hour session is hands-on at the table, so you're learning by doing rather than just watching. With only eight students total, two tables, and two instructors, you'll get plenty of individualized attention throughout.
Brigid and Kasumi will guide you through everything you need to get started: the tiles and what they mean, how to build and read a hand, the rhythm of drawing and discarding, how to call tiles, and the basics of the NMJL card. By the end, you'll understand how a full game is played and have the confidence to sit down at a table and hold your own.
Sessions are designed to build on each other, so we ask that you plan to attend both sessions. Come ready to play, ask lots of questions, and have fun.
What is included:

Sunday, July 12
2:00 to 5:00PM
Ready to take your game to the next level? This afternoon of mahjong is designed for players who know the basics and are ready to dig a little deeper.
We're keeping this group intentionally small so that Brigid and Kasumi can move around the room, answer questions, and offer guidance on gameplay and strategy throughout the afternoon. Expect a relaxed, supportive atmosphere where no question is too small and everyone is working toward the same goal.
Whether youโre still getting comfortable reading the 2026 NMJL card, want to sharpen your calling instincts, or just want more table-time with friendly faces nearby, this is the afternoon for you. Weโll have tasty treats to keep you fortified as you play!
Check-in begins at 2:00PM, and play will start as soon as your table is seated.
By purchasing a ticket, you agree to allow photos and videos taken during the event to be used for promotional and marketing purposes. Tickets are non-refundable. In the event of cancellation, participants will receive a refund.
